Belogradchik

Belogradchik is situated in northwestern Bulgaria, Vidin district, 182 km. northwest of Sofia. It is situated both mountain ranges and Vedernik and Venetsa and is surrounded by Belogradchik rocks. Belogradchik is created in Roman times. The Romans built a "Roman Calais" it can still be heard, it is located several hundred meters away from the fortress "Kale" is almost glued to the Observatory. Belogradchik is destroyed and rebuilt many times during his years of existence. Evidence of its existence can be found in Turkish regisar of 1454g. In 1837 the fortress "Kale" is finished in a type which can be seen today. City name comes from "Bell BLOCKS" referring to the fortress. After the liberation of Belogradchik the city is becoming a major tourist center attracting many Bulgarian and foreign as tourists as the main attraction for them is the Belogradchik Rocks. The city gained worldwide fame with the inclusion of rocks in the vote for new Seven Wonders of the World.

100 m from the Belogradchik fortress is the Astronomical Observatory of the Institute of Astronomy. The observatory has three telescopes, which visitors can observe the night sky. If you visit during daylight hours, you can look at the telescopes and equipment of the observatory, and pictures of interesting celestial objects. Night visits are carried out in advance and in clear weather.

Historical Museum is located in the Panov house, built in 1810 exhibition presents the history, customs and traditions of the region. In Belogradchik is located only in northwestern Bulgaria Museum of Natural History.

About 20 km from the city Magura cave in which are found many rock paintings, dating from different periods. The cave was discovered and a unique solar-lunar calendar with 366 days.

Not far from Magura is Rabisha Lake - the biggest tectoniclake in Bulgaria. Its area is 3250 acres. After studies found that the lake is not drained. According to legend, there lived a monster that he wished to be sacrificed a beautiful local girl. The area around the lake is suitable for camping.
