Reserve Silkosia

Reserve Silkosia is forest reserve is situated in Strandja Mountain, between the villages of Bulgari and Kosti and covers part of the catchment area of Veleka. This is the oldest reserve in the country - so named for early 1931 in order to conserve vegetation in its area. Since its altitude does not exceed 250 meters, this is the lowest reserve in Bulgaria. There is much variety of plants, some rare, others are typical of other latitudes, which makes the place very interesting from a scientific perspective. At the bottom of a wetlands reserve.

This phenomenon is observed plant inversion - under normal conditions beech trees occupy the colder areas at high altitudes, and oak are in the lower parts. In Silkosia - beech forests are located in lower areas and valley areas, while oak forests are located in high places

In more humid parts of the reserve have been observed following plant species - Strandja periwinkle, lavrovishna, Caucasian blueberry, common yew, Caucasian primroses, cyclamen and other spring. Here is the only habitat of wild medlar in Europe.

Silkosia fauna is also rich. From amphibians here include representatives of green toad, frog and Greek „darvestnitsa” leggy frog. For the region are also characteristic Hermann `s tortoise, slow-worm. The variety of snakes is also great.

Nest here and many interesting birds - oriole, Nightingale, few Black-headed Warbler, great whitethroat, blackbird, jay, Chaffinch, various kinds of woodpeckers, raptors and others.
