Bourgas Lake

ourgas Lake , also called Vaya is the largest natural lake in Bulgaria . Is a shallow estuary located west of Burgas on the Black Sea. Reaches a length of 9.6 km. , And its width varies from 2.5 to 5.0 km. The lake is part of the three most important wetland complexes for waterfowl along our coast . Furthermore, it passes over one of the major airways of migratory birds from Europe - Via Pontic . The lake is home to about 260 species of nesting birds , and 61 species of them are listed in the Red Book of Bulgaria.

Western part of the lake is protected and you can see colonies of several species of herons - white crested, small and nocturnal . Of wintering species in the country even lovers can encounter Dalmatian Pelican , Pygmy Cormorant , Pochard, White-headed Duck and others. Except for nesting and wintering Vaya is the resting place for many migratory bird species, which cause it to be declared one of the important bird areas in Europe.
