The house-museum Ilijtsa grandmother is in Chelopek village a few kilometers from the town of Vratsa.
Baba Ilijtsa a brave Bulgarian woman occupies an important place in our history. In May 1878, when Botev entered in a battle against the Turkish armies near Mount Okolchitsa (Vratsa Balkan), its leader was killed, and with it most of the rebels are killed. One of the surviving fighters for national liberation met accidentally Ilijtsa grandmother and she saves him from certain death, risking her live. According to the stories of the locals she had to go along with her narrow and dangerous path, and then by boat across the river Iskar.
When the writer Ivan Vazov visited the village, he learns of her greatest feat. It remains so fascinated and delighted by the story that he decided to immortalize all the action of the old woman, and wrote wonderful story "A Bulgarian" and celebrates the dignity, strength and courage Ilijtsa grandmother.
About 105 years after the event is built and the house-museum dedicated to her. The building was built next to her home and the home is very beautiful and ornate architecture. It was built so that it is authentic and beautiful appearance. In 2003 officially opened its doors to the public. The museum is located in the center of the village on the way to the legendary Mount Okolchitsa. Here you can see how her grandmother lived Ilijtsa to learn more about life and everyday people in northwestern Bulgaria. All items in the house have been donated by local people and the project for its construction is also made free. On one wall in the house is attached a photo of my grandfather Hope - RESCUE grandson told Vazov. Today granddaughter of Ilijtsa, Teodora Mancheva is mayor of Chelopek.
