Dolen Village

Dolen Village is nestled among the folds of the Western Rhodopes, near Gotse Delchev - about 26 km from the city. The village has a very colorful history. It arose soon after the fall of our lands by the Ottoman yoke. Fleeing from the mass conversion to Islam, several families from other parts of the Rhodopes come here and settled through these difficult places. Gradually the village grew. Today it is relatively small, but during the Renaissance locals have won better than cattle, tobacco and production of famous Rhodope rugs.

Today the village is still difficult to access with the exception of a small nearby village, the only inhabited place in the area. Probably because of its isolation are stored here great masterpieces of the Bulgarian construction of the Renaissance. More than 70 houses, well preserved and carefully restored, now tell us about the history of Dolen. In the middle of XX century the village was declared a historical monument.

If, however, expect to wait for you here from the world luxuries of modern civilization, it is better to reset - journey to the village of Lower is more like a trip back in time, because it seems to have stopped here 150 years ago. Most streets are paved, but most of the houses are covered with typical regional stone roofs, which are very similar to fish scales.
