Late medieval church "St. Mary " is located in the village of Dolna Dikania . Nowadays it is relatively well maintained but needs urgent remedial work . Some of the stones on the roof and conch are broken , partially crumbling mortar and the bond between the stone blocks . The church is dedicated to the mother of Jesus - Mary - the most revered saint in the Christian world .
Village Dolna Dikania is located on Route E-79 Sofia - Kulata. To get to the church "St. Mary ". Look rural cemeteries. You can ask for one of the local orientation , but most of them do not know it . If you travel towards Kula and passing through the village to the left of the road , see a small chapel - " Nicholas the Wonderworker " - it was built in recent years. Turn left from the main road , so the chapel to remain on your right and after about 100-200 meters collapse right on a dirt road that crosses a small river and head to the pine forest hill . There is a church. It basilica building measuring about 4.25 X 6.5 m was built in the XVI-XVII century stone and brick , cemented with plaster . "St. Mary " is illuminated by three small loophole windows , 1 in the 3 conchas . Note that it is not very bright inside. Her ship has a semi-cylindrical stone arch covered with stone slabs. Conch are also covered with stone slabs . On the west side of the church in recent times , has built an extensive gallery.
To this day preserved part of the frescoes . Fragments of them you can see only the eastern altar wall. Mural decoration is subject to the medieval canonical scheme . Are preserved , although heavily damaged Shirshaya heavenly Mother in the apse , on both sides : the Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin of the Annunciation . Among them - Ubrus on both sides - medallions of archangels . Over Annunciation scene Ascension pendant with the image of Christ . The other walls are missing murals, it is possible that they did not have been written .
The frescoes of the cemetery church "Virgin Mary" bear the stylistic features of late medieval mural of XVI-XVII century and marked the end of the medieval Bulgarian monumental mural .
