St. Nikola Church

Next to Daskalolivnitsata is the church "St. Nikola" , the oldest in the city. From a letter on a Psalter , presented in 1518 to the church of one Pera, we learn that it already existed at the beginning of XVI century. According to the legends know that the church owned many old manuscripts written on parchment . Even if there was a special priest who kept the books and handing them to use. On April 23, 1800 , St. George , when Elena is attacked by Kurdzhalii church "St. Nikola" was burned , and with it burned and most of the books. Renewed in its present form in 1804 with funds from the wealthier citizens and labor population . It was built in secret, without the permission of the Turkish authorities for 40 days.

Its external architecture is modest and unassuming , almost invisible , not to annoy the invader . The interior is richly decorated in full agreement with orthodox notions of the temple as a mirror of the human soul.

Church "St. Nicholas" was painted by famous during that time deer painters David and Jacob , a native of Lower neighborhood Bolertsi , which completed its work in 1817-1818 year. In their work as assistants participated venison painters John Popovich, Jordan Mihov Klimentski . The murals have value and are declared monuments of national importance. Here are the images of the saints Methods Moravian , New Sofia Georgi Sava Serbian and the image of St. Clement of Ohrid, which is one of the rare in Bulgaria and Macedonia and has high artistic value. On the right side of the choir space is built with beautiful stone inscription from Doyno grammar, stating the date of citizens and donors . With great artistic value are wooden iconostasis and bishop's throne in the church.

In 1966 the church was constructive strengthened. In conducting the restoration of frescoes in the northern door is open stone built with a nice embossed image of the patron of the Church of St. Nicholas.
