Perperikon

Perperikon / Hyperperakion, Perperakion / is located in the Eastern Rhodopes, 15 km northeast of present-day town of Kardzhali. From Sofia to the site can be reached by well maintained road Sofia-Asenovgrad-Kardzhali and Sofia-Haskovo Kardzhali. Perperikon itself stands on a cliff top elevation 470 m at its foot lies the village of Upper fortress. Around it runs Perpereshka gold-bearing river, forming a fertile valley with a length of 10 km and a width of 3-4 km. Convenient river valley has created excellent conditions for life since ancient times. Therefore, it is strewn with dozens of archaeological sites from different eras whose natural home is the Perperikon. Nearby Perpereshka River flows into the lake "Cold well, built in the bed of the river Arda. Site of infusion in Kaloyantsi village is very beautiful and is built as a water-ski resort. Quantity and type of evidence was found proving that this place was located in the famous ancient temple of Dionysus. Perperikon is where it was believed to have been exposed relics of Orpheus, or part thereof. The whole archaeological complex Perperikon consists of four main parts of the Stone Age. The first is the massive wall, the second is the Acropolis, built of huge stone blocks, occupying the highest part of the hill. The third unit of Perperikon palace, which is carved into the rocks and covering an area of ​​10,000 square meters fourth part of the complex are the northern and southern suburbs, which constitute a system of small streets in the rocks, buildings and temples. At the foot of Perperikon already built parking, fountain and visitor center under construction, provides for and securing the area.
