Old River Reserve

Old River is a nature reserve which falls within the territory of the Central Balkan National Park . It was established in 1981 in order to preserve the unique to the Stara Planina range of deciduous , coniferous and mixed forests.Encompasses the watershed of Old River above the town of Karlovo . This is one of the most beautiful rivers in Bulgaria, which meanders between steep cliffs dotted with enticing pools . The reserve is best known for its plant diversity . It found thermophilic oaks , hornbeam and beech , fir and spruce . Here are the locations of more than 45 plants of the Bulgarian Red Book , and twenty of them are not found in other countries, and three of them can be seen only in this reserve. Animal shelter in reserve " Old River" , do not yield as conservation value of plants - 65 vertebrate species breed here . Many of them , mostly raptors - golden eagle, white-tailed buzzard, big and small hawk , owl , are also endangered. Representatives of amphibians and reptiles - darvestnitsa frog , salamander , slow worm and others. Mammals are also very interesting from a conservation perspective . At Old River is the western field constantly on the southern slopes of the Balkan chamois that migrated here from Dzhendema reserve in winter. Other interesting inhabitants include marten , brown bear and otter . With its unique variety of protected plant and animal species Reserve Old River ranks among the top in importance in Bulgaria .
