Regional Historical Museum "Academician Yordan Ivanov " was established in 1897 It is one of the oldest and largest museums in Bulgaria . Named after the famous Bulgarian historian , archaeologist and folklorist Yordan Ivanov.
On November 3, 1897 at pedagogical school in Kyustendil opens first museum , the establishment of which was approved by prescription № 17323 of December 1, 1897 of the Ministry of Education . It is the first in southwestern Bulgaria and the third in the country school museum after those famous secondary school in Gabrovo and Stara Zagora male three-class school.
At the end of 1907 was adopted Rules of the Museum at the Community Center "Brotherhood ", which became operational on 1 January 1908, as a second museum in the city with curator George Zlatevski teacher . The museum planned to have several divisions : community center work , living standards, housing and furniture, occupation , dress, communication and trade, history and archeology, geography, animals and minerals.
On 6 August 1944 the community center museum became a town museum gallery. Since 1960, has the status of County Historical Museum. 1992 named Yordan Ivanov . Decree № 153 of 28 July 2000 the Council of Ministers was transformed into the Regional History Museum Kyustendil based and carries out the cultural and educational activities in Kyustendil , Pernik and Blagoevgrad.
The museum can be considered unique archaeological and numismatic artifacts. It is also possible and visit the permanent exhibitions :
"National liberation struggles of people from Kyustendil " - located in the house-museum " Ilyo " - Tsar Liberator № 189, in the restored house of Ilio Markov.
" Urban Life and Culture of Kyustendil population at the end of XIX and beginning of the twentieth century " - the exposure is housed in a museum " Emfiedzhieva House" - Gorotsvetna St № 24a in the restored house of Kyustendil craftsperson Hristo Lazov Kazandjiyata .
" Rescue of the Bulgarian Jews " - The exhibition is housed in a house-museum " Dimitar Peshev " - Tsar Simeon I st № 11 in the restored house of Dimitar Peshev . Includes original articles , photographs and facsimiles of the events of March 1943 and of the globally recognized merit of Dimitar Peshev and his fellow Peter Mihalev Assen Suichmezov , Vladimir and Ivan Kourtev Momtchilov contributed to the saving of the Jews in Bulgaria .
