Natural History Museum in Kotel is an attractive place for children and for all nature lovers. Its founder was born in Kotel teacher Vasil Georgiev (1875-1963), who for 60 years studied and collected samples of local flora and fauna. As a result of his tireless work and love of nature and native children, the museum's collection includes more than 30,000 pieces: fossils, insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds. So today in the museum can be seen largely natural wealth of the Eastern Balkan Mountains.
In 1952 into the service of patriotic Kotel public building opens first exposure provincial Natural History Museum in Bulgaria. The new building which now houses the museum was built in 1981. Museum impresses with its exposition, organized on an area of 1000 square meters - It is the third largest in the country, but primarily in exposure presented herein. The museum shows the lifestyles and habitats of individual species. Exhibited rare and endangered species such as bustard, black vulture, black stork, golden eagle, otter, brown bear. Of particular interest are donated royal penguin, crocodile and others.
Mountains around the town of Kotel is beautiful and attractive, the slopes are covered with beech and oak forest, artificially planted pine trees, meadows, saturated with the aroma of thousands of herbs and grasses, rock formations, clear cold springs with waterfalls and rapids, beautiful and secluded caves - over 125 in number, located around the city. There are several routes by which all nature lovers can walk to touch the incredible beauty and power of the mountain to see rare birds and animals to get rid of the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Upon request, the museum provides a guide to the routes.
