City Tower is situated in northwestern Bulgaria, 35 km southwest of the town of Vidin. The remains of the ancient fortress "Castra Martis” are located in the center of the town of Kula.
The castle was declared an architectural monument in 1965. Its occurrence is related to the history of Bulgarian lands in the Roman and Byzantine times (I-VI century). The remains of the fort are located in the historic park "Castra Martis", not far from them is museum with the findings made in studies of the fortress. The castle guarded the important Roman road from Bononia (Town of Vidin) for Singidunum (Belgrade).
Archaeological studies have shown that before the construction of the fortress, the same slope, which is located, there was a small Thracian settlement in which life began early first millennium BC and continued through the first centuries of the Roman Empire. The castle consists of two parts - a small square fort – “quadriburgius” and castle located south of it. Both parts are built in different periods.
Constructed panoramic site on the main street of the city allows visitors to enjoy the beauty of the castle in its entire form. Provided is a castle night light. Offered by the municipality of Kula talk with a tour of the fortress of the Bulgarian language cost 2 lev for foreigners, 1 lev for Bulgarians. No entry fees, the fortress is accessible at any time.
