Dark Hole is one of the longest caves in Bulgaria, located 52 km north of Sofia. It is located in the rock crown over Lakatnik, 27 meters above the river Iskar.
Dark Hole is one of the first explored and mapped caves. Studies and development of accurate maps continue to this day. A system of 2 main galleries linked. The cave is an intricate maze of entrances, galleries, waterfalls, rapids, drains, lakes and underground rivers.
The fauna of the Dark Hole is well researched and very rich. In the cave live 17 troglobionts (creatures adapted to life without light) - water snails, lower crustaceans, beetles.
Dark Hole is not adapted for tourists. Due to the labyrinth of its nature, it must be visited with an experienced guide and necessary equipment.
The entrance to the cave is located in beautiful Lakatnishki rocks - also landmark. They are high in places to 250 meters. Over time, water and wind have carved into the soft limestone bizarre and beautiful forms. Some resemble towers, pinnacles, pyramids and more. Rocks is a well-shaped path with railings and recreation areas, starting from the spring against Zhitolyub Lakatnik. It leads to Alpine Meadow - a favorite place for climbers and mountaineers. From the driveway there are branches of the Dark Hole Caves and Zidanka. Alpine meadow itself is built shelter and recreation. The wide alley right goes onto a Black wall in the upper part which houses the Alpine shelter "Eagle Nest".
On top of the rock stands a monument of dead rebels in the uprising in September 1923, which is visible from afar.
The rocks are a popular destination for climbers, but also a good place to walk - the fresh green meadows offer numerous picnic areas and camping outdoors. From the top of scales Lakatnishki is a breathtaking view over the valley of the Iskar River.
