Historical Museum Montana

Museum in Montana was established in 1951 as a museum on September Uprising and in 1991 was converted into a historical museum.

The museum has the following departments: "Archaeology", "Nature", "History of Bulgaria XIV - XIX century", "New History", "Contemporary History" and "Real cultural monuments."

The museum has preserved artifacts of the ancient history of the city - Eneolithic. It is gathered a large collection of tools. From the time of the Thracians, who inhabited Montana to I century AD., Has left many artifacts. Exposed is ceramic with different ornaments and Thracian battle dress at the end of the Late Iron Age. Especially valuable exhibit is Yakimovo treasure discovered in 1972 All items are made of silver. The treasure is dated II-I century BC. Special attention is paid to the period of the Roman Empire, when Montana was very developed city and an important regional center. In addition to the rich collection of utensils and coins as part of the museum in Popskata garden is built lapidarium which holds 56 monuments found in the city. Particularly important are the marble slabs with inscriptions which are only written sources on the history of the city in II - III century

As part of the Historical Museum Mihailovata House - restored and preserved Renaissance House, which houses the ethnographic collection of over 350 objects. Exposed is a collection of traditional handicrafts of the region.

Very well preserved and partially restored the Roman fortress Castra ad Montanezium hilltop fortress above the city. It is also part of the rich cultural heritage of this ancient city.
