Medieval church "St. Stephen"

The medieval church "St. Stephen", also called "The New Metropolis" is located at the southern end of Old Town. In its construction have been used many architectural elements - cornices, capitals, reliefs from dismantled early Christian buildings.

Originally the church was named after the Virgin Mary. Therefore, the murals are thematically related to the life of Mary. Church of St Stephen's name was located in the nose of the Nessebar peninsula, but after falling into the sea, the "New Metropolis," having long patron of the Virgin Mary, became the successor of Saint's name. Date of leaving the church is recorded in the donor's inscription placed above the south door of the nave - 1599

Depicted are over 1,000 pieces in 258 compositions. The scenes of the miracles of Christ are given in a series of gospel legends. The characteristics of the style of display allow to distinguish the hand of the three masters: two worked in the eastern part of the nave, and others - in the west. In the early eighteenth century on the eastern wall of the narthex was painted scene "Doomsday" in the traditional iconography of his time.

In the church are preserved in original style painted iconostasis from the late sixteenth century and the carved bishop's throne and pulpit from the late eighteenth century.

Thanks to its preserved architectural appearance, iconostasis, and above all of highly paintings, "St. Stephen "is one of the most important monuments of the Bulgarian cultural heritage.
