On 1 January 1950 to the section "Science , Art and Culture " at the City People's Council in Plovdiv creates service " Art Gallery " , led by the artist Angel Tomov . The official opening of the gallery, then called the State Art Gallery, is March 2, 1952 First of Director George Tchaikovsky .

The collection of the gallery in 1952 has about 300 works collected by the National Archaeological Museum in Plovdiv , the State Library " Ivan Vazov " in Plovdiv, Regional Museum of Regional Standing Committee in Plovdiv, Plovdiv municipal city museum ( 1949 : ethnographic Museum ) collection department "Science , art and culture," museum in the French male college "St. Augustine " in Plovdiv , the National Art Academy in Sofia, National Art Gallery in Sofia.

Today Art Gallery has 7210 works , of which 2310 - paintings, 2580 - Graphics , 545 - Sculpture and Applied Arts 574 - Icons , 1234 - Mexican art , 93 photographs . Is particularly representative collections of the works of George Danchov Zografina (1846-1908) , Stanislav Dospevski (1823-1878) , Nikolai Pavlovich (1835-1894) , Michael Lyutov (1887-1965) , Hristo Stanchev (1870-1950) , Tcanko Lavrenov (1896-1978) , Zlatyu Boyadziev (1903-1976) , Georgi Atanasov (1878-1950) , Krum Djakov ( 1909-1976 ) . Presents works by many of the members of the Association of South Bulgarian Artists (1911-1945) and the generation of the second half of the twentieth century - George Bozhilov (1933-2001) , Yoan Leviev (1934-1994) , Kolju Witkowski ( 1925-1998) , Encho Pironkov (1932 ) , Dimitar Kirov ( 1935-2008 ) , Hristo Stefanov ( 1931 ) and others. Are well represented Plovdiv Plovdiv and related artists from the late twentieth and early twenty-first century. The exhibition is housed in the building of the Girls' High School , designed and built under the leadership of Arch. Joseph Shniter in 1881 arranged chronologically on the 2nd floor. Included are more than 200 original works of art that track the development of Bulgarian art from the Renaissance to the present day. Presents eminent authors and characteristic stylistic trends . Wealth of information is available in English and Bulgarian languages.
