Moussala lakes are located in the Rila Mountains, at the foot of the highest peak on the Balkan Peninsula - Musala (2925 m). Moussalа lakes are part of the National Park "Rila", which was declared a protected area on February 24, 1992 in Rila has more than 120 permanent glacial lakes and about 30 temporary.

Four cirque terraces are seven lakes. At the highest point is Glacial lake has a glacial origin. Throughout the year the lake is stiff in the ice, its waters are unfrozen only from July to November. On the south side of the lake is the northern slope of Mount Musala. Glacial Lake is the deepest of all seven Moussalа lakes.
