Initially, the building is to be used as a residence of King Alexander Battenberg, so to this day is called Battenberg Palace. Fund of the museum contains more than 130 000 movable cultural monuments. Develop its activities in terms of conservation and public display, and study of all intangible cultural heritage of history and nature of northeastern Bulgaria. Now the Regional Historical Museum - Ruse presents seven exhibitions, three of which are outdoors - Ancient Fortress “Sexaginta Prista”, Ivanovo rock monasteries and churches and medieval town Cherven.
The central building in Rousse, which is located on Alexander Battenberg Square, can be seen striking treasure from Borovo. But here on two floors there are five major exhibitions of the museum. The oldest and largest is the Department of Archaeology. His fund has approximately 70,000 objects that represent the most important features in the face of material and spiritual culture of the Rousse near the end of ХІV century. These include Neolithic idol sculpture and ceramics, silver Thracian treasure from Borovo, Thracian jewelry, a collection of Thracian helmets lifestyle objects and weapons from the Roman era, the period of jewelry from the First Bulgarian Empire (VІІ-ХІc.), silver treasure from. Baniska village(ХІІІc.), embossed ceramic icons from Cherven (ХІVc.) frescoes from medieval rock monasteries, many collective coin finds and more. Most of the artifacts stored in the department come from archaeological excavations, which was launched in 1904. Scientific Fund of the Department of Ethnography contains extensive information about the traditional culture of over 80 villages in Rousse ethnographic region. The exhibition presented rural fabric and garments, presenting traditional weaving techniques and ornamentation, and the typical female, male and children's costumes. There are also copies of original ritual breads that are part of the festive-ritual system of the local population. The museum has a department dedicated to the history of Bulgaria from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, covering mainly the period of Ottoman rule. Most significant among the exhibits are personal belongings, letters, weapons, documents of prominent revolutionaries Rousse, public, cultural and educational leaders whose business has national implications. In particular historical value are: weapons collection, the archive of family Obretenova, archive of Panaiot Khitov. The collection of books that contain Arabic, Turkish and Persian manuscripts, incunabula of Slavonic and Turkish, has a unique copy. Interesting is the department of numismatics. There is a place for newest history of Rousse region.
