Kalin Dam is the highest dam situated, not only in Bulgaria but on the Balkan Peninsula. It was built on 2394 meters altitude in the Rila mountain, on the bare mountain plateau , from which the view is simply indescribable and is definitely a must-see live! The reservoir is connected to the Black Lake converted subsequently into Lake Karagyol . Two dams form communicating vessels, are connected by 75 -foot pipe. It was built in 1943-1946 year.

Dam Kalin can be reached by scenic mountain route from the town of Rila village Pastra by overcoming about 1700 m elevation . If you are coming from Sofia to move towards the Kulata. After you pass Dupnica , take the marked detour to the Rila Monastery. At the beginning of the village Pastra a small road signs in brown dam Kalin . By car can move only to WEC Pastra, then the path is for pedestrians only . The dam is located about an hour away to the Seven Rila lakes ass, and nearly three hours away. Interestingly, this is the easiest route to approach the iconic Rila Lakes , as the road is only downhill . Nearby is the Ivan Vazov hut - again, about an hour's walk . From here come the fastest path to Otovishki peak ( 1:00 hour ) . This is incomparable with the five-hour shift from Panichiste to the top. If you can, make sure you visit because it is seen Seven Lakes , arranged in a line - a sight that everyone should see at least once in their lives. Nearly an hour away is the peak and potassium. On a clear day , and it offers breathtaking panoramic views. The area of the lake Kalin is popular among lovers of paragliding . Set a record for the longest flight is here - from the dam to the capital city - 50 kilometers.
