Monument "Founders of the Bulgarian State" is located 6 km from the town of Shumen. It is situated on a hill Ilchov in the Natural Park Shoumen plateau. The idea for the monument came in 1977 during preparations for the celebrations of the 1300th anniversary of the Bulgarian state. Construction began in August 1979, a monument was inaugurated on November 28, 1981
The monument consists of two groups of concrete forms, among which there are small spaces. Here is the largest in Europe, mosaic outdoor triptych which, together with 21 sculptures symbolizing the idea of the creation, development and rise of the Bulgarian state in the period from VII to X century.
The first depicts Asparoukh (considered the founder of Bulgaria) - he was presented with a sword stuck in the ground and hands raised in different directions, which will show where the Bulgarian state. Then follow the sculptures of Tervel, Krum, Omurtag (Bulgarian khans who ruled during the VIII and IX century), standing 18 meters high and around them depicted excerpts from the old Byzantine chronicles. Below them was recorded wisdom of Khan Omurtag: "Man, even better to live, died and another is born and let us born later, when he sees these letters, remember those who made them ... his name was Khan Yuvigi Municipality. "
At the top of the monument is formed of light cross - a symbol of the adopted Christianity in the IX century.
Golden Age of Bulgaria during the reign of Simeon the Great (893 - 927) was presented with 11 pieces. On top of the memorial was placed a lion, weighing 1000 tonnes.
For the monument operates Visitor Information Centre and a permanent exhibition. Often the monument is elected to conduct marriages, ritual costs 90 leva. For lecture have to pay five leva. During the winter months working time is shorter by 17 h and during the summer to 20 h. There is an opportunity to look through binoculars.
