Plateau clearly stands above the town of Shumen. In 1980 it was declared one of eleven natural parks in Bulgaria to be better preserved its interesting plateaus and karst topography with diverse flora and fauna.

Plateau characterized by steep slopes and sheer rocks outlining the edge of the plateau. In the western part of the broad flat ridge summit stands Tarnov share (502 meters) - the highest point in the whole Danube Valley.

The park has eight relatively large caves, the most popular among them is "Divdyadov dungeon." It is the longest of the eight (2225 m). From the ceiling of the Great Hall fairy descends from thousands of stalactites, varying in size, shape and color - from milky white to dark brown. The most common inhabitants here are a few species of bats. The tourist entrance is 5 meters above the natural, from which expires Underground River. In the southeast foot gush other three karst springs.

Many caves are homes to serve the people. Open tools from stone, flint and bone are evidence that the caves were inhabited by man since ancient times. Some of them were turned into rock monasteries, churches and monastic cells. These remarkable monuments related to religious, cultural and educational life are dated from the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (XII - XIV c.)

The archaeological landscape of the plateau entered and remains of several Thracian settlements IV - II century BC In the XVIII - XIX century on the plateau were built over 13 military forts, forming part of the defense system considered by military experts for the impregnable city of Shumen. Even today there are trenches and shafts in the areas Ildaz Tabia, Tarnov Tabia, Cheng Tabia and others. Here is the reserve "Bukaka" which protect the forest from the Moesian beech aged over 100 years. This is the largest forest of its kind in the Danube Plain.

From ancient times the plateau is closely connected with the lives of people in this region. It combines natural beauty, history and cultural heritage of the region. On the plateau is the famous tourist site Shumen fortress. Against it is impressive monument dedicated to the 1300th anniversary of the modern Bulgarian state in the Balkans. However, very near Shumen are the first two capitals of Bulgaria - Pliska and Preslav.

Access to the park is covered by a well-built road lane network. Numerous hiking trails lead to interesting forms of relief, natural places, historical sites, rock formations and chalets.

The park has good conditions for hiking and bicycling, tourist orientation, climbing speleotourism, paragliding and more.
