At the outset of the place is an ancient Thracian settlement. Its place in '29 AD. is based on the ancient Roman city Durostorum. During the Middle Ages it was naming Drastar and after the conquest by the Turks was heavily fortified. Released by Russian soldiers after the Second Balkan War proved in Romania and only in 1940 was returned to Bulgaria. Rich history and a lot of ups and downs marked the development of the Republic during the centuries. In one of the oldest museums in Bulgaria - Silistra Museum of History can meet with more than 60,000 artifacts and treasures from the past. The museum is housed in the restored fortress of Silistra. 90% of the modern city is located within the established in 1976. archaeological reserve "Durostorum Silistra." In the exhibition you can see unique exhibits: Roman stone sundial, Roman sports helmet-mask depicted griffins grave of precious metals from different eras, from the chariot burial of a noble Roman magistrate by the end of the third century, Roman statue made in Durostorum gold ring on one of the first Christians, collections, jewelry, stamps Bulgarian and Byzantine rulers and aristocrats higher, gold jewelry, coin collections and treasures from the fourth century BC. to the fifteenth century AD., one of the biggest collections of medieval crosses, original tools, costumes, masks mummers in the region and many other exhibits. The most famous in Bulgaria and abroad ancient monument Durostorum undoubtedly tomb murals of a senior dignitary - the patrician Flavius Aetius. About 10 km southeast of Silistra on the Danube Small Kanogyol are Thracian rock cult complex, which includes 4 rock sanctuaries. Central shrine called "Badjaliata" is located in a picturesque canyon. The rock temple is shaped in a large cave, which can be reached by a tunnel carved into the rock. South of Golesh are 7 convent with numerous churches and chapels - the earliest rock monasteries in the Bulgarian lands that have preserved original interior and surrounded by unspoilt nature.
