Smilyan village is located 15 km south of Smolyan. It is located on the southern slopes of Kaynadinsky hill in the valley of the upper reaches of Arda. With its 1,600 inhabitants it is the largest village in the Smolyan region and one of the oldest. Smilyan name comes from the name of the Slavic tribes resins, which have created it. Preserved to this day an old clock tower and houses in the typical Rhodope Mountain style - built of stone and wood, are evidence of the ancient history of the village. The clock tower is over 10 meters. Originally it is built as a watchtower when Smilyan was the administrative center of the Ottoman Empire. Above is a way, the entire valley of Arda River and locals been warned on time about coming enemy. The village is famous for its skillful masters of Rhodopi slippers - an integral part of folk costume Rhodopeans.

When you mention Smilyan, many people think of big bean variety that is grown there. We may enjoy the exclusive Rhodope cuisine and interesting dishes of delicious beans. Since 2003 every year the village organizes holiday smilyan beans, every last weekend of November. Traditionally, the festival opens with gun-fire of cannon Frog.

Because it is located on the banks of the Arda River, Smilyan is a place for fishermen. Catches include barbel, chub and trout and attracts many fishermen during the warm months - fishing grounds around the village are listed as the most attractive fishing destination for anglers across the country. The area of the upper valley of Arda River is emerging as an attractive destination for hiking, visiting public works and caves. Nearby are Agushevi Konatsi passage cave fortress and the ruins of the eponymous castle. The region has 23 karst caves, which are better known: Uhlovitsa, Borikovska, Nadarska, Tipits Golubovitsa and cave system. Lovers of extreme tourism and adventurers have to embark on the adventure Garga Dere. One of the tests there is a metal road 140 meters, built with iron rungs in the rock. This provides another extreme experience - downhill alpine trolley representing ropeway between the two shores of the River Autumn on the 20 m height above the water surface. Near Smilyan has an ostrich farm, which is open for visitors - just follow the signs towards the village of Arda. The view of these exotic birds amongst the wonderful scenery of Rhodope really worth it.

Many houses in the village are offering accommodation. The hotels are beautiful and really affordable, and discover the region must take you to a beautiful spot.

Visitors Center offers guided tours to the village and runs from April to October from 9.00 to 18.00
