Roman Catholic cathedral "St. Joseph" is located in the city center, near the square "Holy Sunday". The construction of the temple began in October 1875. Contribution to build has priest of Order of the younger brothers of St. Francis - Italian Capuchin Father Timothy of Biella. As a growing city in the early twentieth century, Sofia attracted many people from Western Europe. The city came many Italians, Czechs, Hungarians, Frenchmen, most of whom were Catholic parish and gradually increase from 50 families in 2000. Over the years the parish has developed cultural and educational activities was based on hospital and school.

In March 1944, after the bombing of Sofia cathedral was completely destroyed. Since then he has kept the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes. For a period of around 50 years Catholic community in Sofia held their meetings and liturgies in the small hall near the site of the destroyed temple.

In 2002, during his visit to Bulgaria Pope John Paul II consecrated the new church building. The new building of the temple was officially opened and consecrated by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano in May 2006

Above the altar in the temple complex there is 7-foot wooden cross of Christ. The rear has a small playground, which offers beautiful views of the area. From Monday to Saturday liturgy is the Bulgarian from 08.00 am and 18.00. No entrance fees for visitors.
