Alepu a marsh lagoon , which is located in the southern part of the Black Sea , about 7 km south of Sozopol. Alepu in Greek means fox , so the lagoon is often called swamp fox . In 1986 was declared a natural landmark with protected status and joined Ropotamo reserve. It is the firth , which was formed in the foothills and is surrounded by a nose Agalina north and south Humata . Sand dunes which separate it from the sea , are also protected status . Interestingly, the spit that separates it from the sea, is almost four kilometers long and is located meridian , becoming the second - long stretch of sandy beach on the southern coast .
Alepu reaches a length of 3.3 km , width up to 320 meters and a total area of 0.2 square kilometers. Salinity has ranged between 1.3 and 7.0 percent . Much of the marsh is covered by reeds and other marsh vegetation. It is also home to many protected bird species . Nest and winter here pygmy cormorant , herons , swans and more. It is one of the few places along the Black Sea nesting osprey . Sand and water lily hand are an integral part of the flora of the swamp. Alepu is important and not accidentally together with the adjacent dunes was declared a protected area . It was declared as one of Europe's major ornithological areas. Fishing is strictly forbidden , but the fight against poachers is very difficult .
