Svilengrad is situated on both banks of the Maritsa River near where you gather Bulgarian, Turkish and Greek borders. It is 300 km southeast of Sofia. 14 km from town is the border checkpoint on the border with Turkey, Captain Andreevo.
Even in ancient times the area occur Thracian settlement, which later developed as a Roman and Byzantine fortress Burdenis, guarding the way to Constantinople. At this place Svilengrad is formed after the fall of Bulgaria under Ottoman rule. It is built around the town's 16th century bridge "Mustafa Pasha." The facility is considered one of the finest of its era. 7 km from Svilengrad is Mezek village, around which there are many Thracian mounds, including Mound Treasury of Mycenaean type, Maltepe. It was found Mezek beehive-like tomb. Above the village rise the ruins of medieval fortress Neutzikon, one of the best preserved in Bulgaria.
