In 1913 South Dobrudja ends within the Kingdom of Romania. For two years with French and Belgian military professionals, build an imposing fortress with 15 fort, forts and earthworks pitfalls. The massive facility is defended by a garrison impressive - 39 000 people, 150 guns and dozens of machine-gun nests. Consider as impregnable, and General Commander Aslan called her "my little Verdun."

But 5 and 6 September 1916 with the impetuous attack Bulgarian army under the command of General Kiselov, her capture only 33 hours. In battles in Tutrakan killed over 8000 people. Were captured and 28,000 Romanian soldiers.

After the epic battle for Tutrakan military command of the Fourth Infantry Division Preslavska solve all killed on the battlefield to be buried at Fort № 6 of the fortification line. In two weeks the residents of surrounding villages and Tutrakan carry dead soldiers. Survivors Bulgarian soldiers placed wooden crosses and the names of recognized killed and placed in general unknown graves. On September 6, 1917 was the first celebration of the heroic battle. On this day fund was established to raise a monument to those killed in battle. In 1942 wooden crosses are replaced with stone, a memorial is surrounded by a wooden fence. In 2007 in the memorial complex was built and a chapel. It is dedicated to "St. George "- patron of the Bulgarian army.
