Church of St. Nicholas

Church of St. Nicholas impresses with its beautiful temple architecture, ranked among the major attractions of the seaside capital. It is especially revered by Varna sailors and their families whose saint - St. Nicholas is the patron. Located in the city center, the temple was built back in 1866. All funds are donated by one person - Paraskev Nicolau. He was a resident of Odessa and citizen of the Russian Empire. But it looks great love for him was his native city of Varna, who bequeathed 50,000 rubles for the construction of a church issue and the hospital which treated locals. Older people told that the reason for the building became a vow before God and protector of sailors St. Nicholas. In one of the travel merchant Paraskeva Nicolau Varna to Odessa in the sea a great storm broke. Frightened salesman promised that if we go live to the port will pick up the church and hospital in honor of the saint. Insiders say that the history of no other church temples built by means of only one person.

The temple is built of local stone well treated, and the arches are built of bricks. Before him is a monument of the donor. Construction work continues 11 years - from 1859 to 1866 Temple "St. Nicholas' Church is the only sea in Bulgaria. That was in 1927 when two Bulgarian masters treated the Holy Sepulchre icon of the temple, lit it and returned. He was recorded in church books as sea. Here before 9 September were falling and vows of Varna sailors. In the autumn of 2000 the idea of Dimitar Staykov, a longtime engineer in the BMF and the support of maritime institutions to the entrance of the temple is placed another symbol of the sailors- ship anchor. It was taken from the ship "Bogdan" before being submitted for cutting.

The temple is located near the Black Sea Hotel and Festival Complex in Varna.
