St Forty Martyrs is a Bulgarian Orthodox Church, a monument of the Turnovo School of Art. Located at the foot of Tsarevets in Veliko Tarnovo. The temple is a cultural monument and is closely related to the history of Bulgaria. Church is most famous medieval Bulgarian monument in Veliko Tarnovo. It was built and painted at the time of the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Assen II in honor of his great victory in the Battle of Klokotnitza on March 9, 1230 (the day of Saint 40 Martyrs ) over Epirus Despot Theodore Comnenus. The church of St Forty Martyrs are among the most significant Old epigraphic monuments - Omurtag, Assen and column border fortress of Rhodes from time of Krum. Some do not read well, but the touch of something so old triggers many emotions. On May 18, 1888 in this church is committed marriage of the Prime Minister of Bulgaria Stefan Stambolov with Polikseni Costache Stancioff of Svishtov. After the engagement was made in Svishtov, guests arrive by 40 cab in Turnovo sanctuary, where a wedding ritual. On September 22, 1908 in the same church King Ferdinand I of Bulgaria declares independence. In the church are buried the kings Kaloyan, Ivan Asen II, Mikhail Shishman queens Anna Maria and Irina, St. Sava Serbian, and many other members of the royal family and the Bulgarian aristocracy.
