Velingrad is located 130 km from Sofia and 80 km from Plovdiv, in the western part of the Rhodopes. Velingrad is a relatively young city, it is only 60 years, so the town's history is based on the story of three villages Chepino Ladzhene Kamenica and who united in 1948 now they are the three main districts in Velingrad. Named after the heroic guerrilla Vela Peeva, who participated in the antifascist movement. In an ambush by the gendarmerie it sacrifice their lives in the "White Rock" in the high mountains at the end of March 1944 was declared god.Velingrad spa resort of national importance in 1951 and of international importance in 1981 In 2005 the town was named "Spa Capital of Bulgaria" by decision of the Bulgarian Association of Hoteliers and Restaurateurs. Three years later in 2008 the Conference of World tourist organization of hotel and restaurant (IHRA), held in Monterrey, Mexico, Velingrad was named for the "Spa Capital of the Balkans".
Besides the numerous hot springs Velingrad offers access to the exclusive nature of the Western Rhodopes. In the vicinity there are two ski slopes, making year-round resort Velingrad. One of the symbols of Velingrad is the largest karst spring in Bulgaria - Kleptuza. Another interesting place in Velingrad is the Historical Museum. It can be seen in one of the richest exposures of Easter eggs in Bulgaria.

There are many natural attractions in and around Velingrad. The municipality of Velingrad is the dam and "Sarnitsa", near reservoirs are other - "Belmeken", "Batak", "Beglika" which is a favorite destination not only fishermen but also the fans of mountain tourism. Nearby are other mountain resorts - Saint Elias, sports complex "Belmeken". 16 km from Velingrad is situated tribes resort, which is suitable for both winter and summer tourism. 13 km southwest of Velingrad is located Lepenitza cave.
