The museum was founded in 1973 and is located in the western part of the historic building Aprilov High School, which was declared a cultural monument in 1979, the April school is the first Bulgarian secular school, established 1835. Recently, May has, in fact Chiprovo school occurred 200 years before, but this is not taught in school. So in Aprilov School received his education as a prominent Bulgarians Aleko Konstantinov, Emmanuel Manolov. In front of the building is the memorial and in the yard - the tomb of the ideology of modern Bulgarian education - Vasil Aprilov.

The museum exhibition is located in five halls, tracing the historical path of Bulgarian education and education of IX by the end of XX century. Here you will find that in the IX century Bulgaria was the first European country that establish church, school and literature and the Old Bulgarian language is approved as a third literary language after Greek and Latin. Until the liberation of Bulgaria has 1500 primary, 50 male class, 20 girls' secondary schools, 3 high schools and 4 special schools. But most curious from this period is the full reconstruction of the classroom of mutual school of the time. The museum kept the originals of Pliska and Preslav / IX century /, six editions of the Fish Primer "/ 1824 - 1862 year /, Bulgarian art books from the Renaissance to the present, the personal library of Vasil Aprilov, appliances and equipment in physics from end of XIX century, and many other interesting exhibits. The museum functions and specialized teaching library with over 28,000 volumes, and prints, audiovisual studio, a room for temporary exhibitions, a video.
