Leshtava , known as Garvan marsh, near the Danube is located in northeastern Bulgaria, 30 kilometers from the town of Silistra. Located near the mouth of the parched river Kulak in low relief area between Garvan and Popina. The area of the marsh reaches 2.2 square kilometers and its depth - 2 meters. Currently, the north side was built levee that separates it from the Danube. Its shores are covered with aquatic plant representatives - cattail , reed , cane , water buttercup and others. Garvan Marsh is important ornithological importance and in 2008 was declared a protected area in order to protect the habitat of endangered species : the red -necked Grebe , water bull , Black-winged Stilt and Ferruginous Duck . Its territory established 26 species of birds, of which eight are listed is the Red Book of Bulgaria and the other five are of European conservation concern . So Leshtava becomes attractive eco- tourism destination , suitable for bird watching and for photo tourism . Possibly due to the high heat to dry the swamp during the summer months , so it is recommended to visit in the spring ( breeding season of birds ) or autumn ( migration period ) . In the western part of the marsh is built a watchtower from which one can stalk interesting waterfowl . From here you can reach the Danube, as well as fishing river port village of Raven . Since Leshtava is part of a series of wet sites along the River Danube, you can see the other reserves that are the habitat of various and diverse flora and fauna - maintained reserve "Silver " (20 km. ) Malak Preslavets (30 km. ) and " Kalimok Brushlen " (45 km. ) . For lovers of cycling and thanks to the quiet car on the road, this area is very suitable for transition to bicycles. The length of the segment is 26 km starting from the village of Raven passes through the villages absorbed and reach fans and reserve " Silver ."
