Golemobelovski Monastery " Ascension of Christ" is a monument of culture and today is periodically active . It is located about two kilometers from the village of Golemo Belovo in the Rhodope Mountains. By historians know that was founded in the VI century and continued to exist during the First and Second Bulgarian Kingdom. In XVII century during muslims Chepinsko Bulgarians overtakes the fate of hundreds of Orthodox churches and monasteries in the Bulgarian lands - is plundered and destroyed.

There is historical evidence that during the Middle Ages Golemobelovskiyat monastery has attracted dozens of worshipers , including the Bulgarian rulers. Predolaga that the monastery was the seat of a bishop Levkiyskiya . Most likely all tis valley was owned by the monastery.

In these days of the old- cloister are the imposing ruins of the partially restored monastery temple known as Belovska basilica. In the opinion of specialists , the church belongs to the type of building , basilica with a dome covering the central part . The basilica is no central western entrance and two side entrances on the north and south. The south facade was attached triconchal baptistery of which are the foundations . The floor of the church was covered with colorful mosaics and the walls - with geometrical and floral decorations. Judging by the size of the church , the monastery was very rich at the time.

In 1999, near the monastery of " Ascension of Christ" was built a small , one-nave , cruciform church.

We believe that it will be interesting to learn a little more about the village to the monastery Golemo Belovo. Worth it! It was formed in Slavonic era with Slavonic name Belovo - which means "on nice place ." With the construction of the Monastery " Ascension of Christ" , the village was renamed Levko . The area became part of the Bulgarian State during the reign of Khan Krum. Several centuries later, residents become active participants in the struggle for liberation. There is evidence that the community center in the village Apostle of Freedom - Vasil Levski , founded the Committee. Last but not least in importance to point out that the only woman in Flying Band George Benkovski is Maria Sutich from Golemo Belovo. Golemo Belovo was liberated from Ottoman rule on 14 January 1878.
