Cape Kaliakra is one of the most beautiful places along the Bulgarian coast. A mythological story tells of St. Nicholas (patron of sailors) fleeing from the Turks, and God extended land under his feet to slip. That is how was created the nose, but Saint Nicholas was captured and in this place there is a chapel, restored in 1993. According to another legend Kaliakra named a young and beautiful maiden who threw herself from the rocks to be saved from oppressors. The story of 40 girls who knit their hair into one and together they jumped from the coast to avoid being captured. Kaliakra was declared a protected area because of its great beauty - it is a unique combination of steep cliffs and crystal clear waters. The area is famous for its dolphins, great variety of seabirds that nest on the cliffs. The great wealth of flora and fauna in the area of the cape is due mostly to the ecologically clean area free from human activity and therefore retain primary beauty. Extending more than two kilometers of the Black Sea Kaliakra is known as the longest nose in the Balkans. Cape Kaliakra is situated 72 km north of Varna and only 12 km from the small town of Kavarna. Exit to the nose is from Bulgarevo, has nameplates. The main reason for the construction of an ancient fortress called Trizis here is inaccessibility to the cape. The fortress was successively used by Thracians, Romans, Byzantines and Bulgarians.
