Tisata Reserve is located in the village of Upper Breznitsa and Kresna . It is made of two sections - east and west , occupying part of Malashevska and Pirin Mountains, north of Kresna . It was declared a reserve in 1949, then named " Tisova Barchina " and occupies territory with an area of 19 hectares. Tisata created to protect the largest natural habitat of juniper not only in Bulgaria but also in Europe. In the years following its creation Reserve repeatedly changed the territory they occupy. Permanent boundary is defined in 1991 . , Resulting in a reserve area 575 ha and a buffer zone of about 420 hectares . The reserve falls within the protected areas as part of the European ecological network " Natura 2000 " . Wooded area of the reserve is about 79% . Main tree species is juniper - southern protected relict species of Anatolian origin. Reaches a height of 10-15 meters, also juniper trees are found more oak , hornbeam, pine , and others. Bushes are represented mainly by species thorn , jasmine, flu and red juniper .
Expansion of reserves and establishment of a buffer zone is done in order to protect and vast ornithological diversity of the region. It is estimated that within the reserve 109 nesting bird species , 30 % of which belong to the southern resort - Blue Rock Thrush , Orpheus , and the little black-headed warbler , nuthatch belochelaskalna and others. Here the 62 species of European conservation concern . The area is also characterized by a rich herpetofauna . By the occupants of our country's 16 species of snakes here are 11 established species. Among them are the leopard snake, slim shooter cat snake and others. Representatives of the animal world are also southern type , and some species are found only in this region. Reserve " Tisata " and adjacent buffer zone and protected area " Moravian " officially declared an Important Bird Area " Kresna" . Due to its international importance for bird conservation " Tisata " is the most representative of the five places in Bulgaria are designated for protection of species typical for the Mediterranean biogeographical region . Spanish wheatear , rock partridge , the Olive Warbler and others are included in the " Red Book of the Republic of Bulgaria .
According to the law on protected areas in the reserve is prohibited any human activity. Access is limited , movement becomes more certain paths, it is mandatory prior consultation of each visit .
