Price: The Orthodox Church " St. Nedelia " is located in the ancient city of Plovdiv , in the eastern wall of the city fortress , near the eastern city gate Hisar point. The church is known as a monument to the building of the arts during the Bulgarian Revival. In 1892, the church passed from the Office of Ecumenical Patriarchate below that of the Bulgarian Exarchate .
Most likely Plovdiv church "St. Nedelia " was founded in 1578 . The researchers came to this conclusion , since his visit to the German Protestant theologian town preacher Stefan Gerlach mentions it . One thing is certain , however, that the site of the modern church building there was an older church . After the demolition of the old church , to serve religious needs of the population had been built at first chapel. He was initially named "St. Athanasius" and then - " Blessed Virgin ." In this chapel, which today stands at the northern part of the churchyard , was transferred and stored beautiful iconostasis of the old church .
At the end of January 1832 the church parishioners headed by Ivan Koyumzhioglu decide to build new temple. In the late summer of the same year construction , the work of masters Bratzigovo led by Petko Petkov Boz was already a fact. On this occasion, three poems were written in Greek by an unknown author. Church " St. Nedelya " was consecrated on September 19, 1832 by Bishop Nikiforos .
The new church building was constructed of stone with impressive for its time , length 30 meters and width of 25 meters (the largest temple in the city then) . In 1894 it was added to the dome of 16 meters above the ground, painted with the image of Christ Blessing . Later , the architect Michael Nenkov was erected and a high bell tower (instead of the old belfry and low ) . It was completed in 1905 , and in 1912 it was placed large French clock.
Among the precious sights that are worth seeing in the Orthodox Church are the iconostasis and icons creation of Dimitar Hristov Zograph and his son Zafir . The iconostasis of the church is a superb work of woodcarving , established in 1832-1833 , from Jane Spirov . It was erected on a marble base and consists of eighteen pieces of solid walnut and beautiful carving of the dominant flowers, leaves, fruits, birds and animals.
Most of icons in the church " St. nedelia " were made by Dimitar Hristov Zograph and his son Zafir , which is known as Stanislav Dospevski. They depict the Virgin Mary , the Lord Jesus Christ, Holy Sunday , St. John the Baptist , St. George , re- Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary , St. Athanasius , St. Spyridon , St. Haralambos .
