Iskar Dam is the largest dam in Bulgaria on indicator water volume - 673 million cubic meters of water . It was built in the gorge of the Iskar River between Sofia and Samokov area. It provides 78 percent of drinking water in the capital, serves as a water supply and electricity . Into operation in 1954 , and the need and the idea of its construction dates back to 1901. It is the largest engineering facility at the time. In 1954 displaced three villages whose lands are currently at the bottom of the lake - Shishmanovo, Upper Pasarel and Kalkovo . The west bank of the pond is the former local school Kalkovo, survived that seems reminiscent of the former extending this area. To date, the building was converted into a genuine restaurant named " Stork's Nest" . The dam and its surroundings attract many tourists with its majestic mountains , beautiful scenery and vegetation, and clear waters. The reservoir is stocked with fish and is a wonderful place where anglers can practice their hobby . Here you can catch roach , perch , bream , perch , bream , chub ( maple ) , catfish, bleak, roach , carp . If not you're a fan of fishing , you can practice water sports within the basin . You can rent a boat , jet , paddle wheel, and even fly over beautiful landscape . Note that the western , narrower part of the lake is a water zone , where bathing and fishing are strictly prohibited . The rest of the lake is suitable for camping and recreation. There are several tourist resort with amazing panoramic views of the lake and mountain ranges . In the northern part of the basin is located the state hunting association "Iskar" , which provides an opportunity to practice hunting, fishing, photo safari and even horseback riding. In the area you can see a large concentration following species : red deer, fallow deer , wild boar and many more . Here are kept for riding thoroughbred horses from East Bulgarian breed .
