Sliven is known as the "city of the 100 leaders" associated with haidouck movement. Traces of the oldest settlements in the territory of Sliven are dated to the Neolithic - VI millennium BC Remains of primitive stone tools were found in the area Hisarlaka - low on a hill in the city. Ibid found traces of a Thracian settlement about V - III century BC - Thracian Hellenistic pottery and coins. In 1836 in the town is open the first industrial enterprise in the Balkans - textile factory of Dobri Zhelyazkov. Interesting period in the past is 17c. When the city is famous for its rifles, pistols, iron tools for farming, handicrafts and household needs. 100 workshops producing 500 barrels a month. In the bazaar every day were opened 984 shops. 35 inn harbor town guests.
Today, north of town is the natural park of "Blue Ridge", which covers nearly eleven thousand and a half hectares of Sliven Balkan, known as Karandila. East of town is the "Valley of peaches".
Impressive and legendary symbols of Sliven - except Blue Ridge, Old Elm (more than 1000 years), monument of Hadji Dimitar on the central square, the monument of the 7th Cavalry Regiment - "Eaglet", town clock, factory of Dobri Jeliazkov....and Chintulov songs - symbols uniting the entrepreneurial spirit, rebellious passion, impulse of the enlightenment. Even for city visitors who do not know Bulgarian history, they make sense because they are not forgotten pieces of history, they are part of the contemporary atmosphere of the city. In Sliven region are stored 460 archaeological, architectural and over 200 120 historical monuments, 9 of them are of national importance. Among the most visited are the Museum of Textile Industry, the Museum of Sliven bit, the house of Hadji Dimitar, art gallery, the churches St. Sofia and St. Demetrius.
