Cathedral church "Virgin Birth"

One of the most magnificent buildings in the old city is the cathedral church "Virgin Birth". "Cathedral" as is better known among Tarnovo, stands a small square in the Old City (Boyar neighborhood). The construction was done by Kolyu Ficheto during 1842-1844, the all money collected for the building with donations from believers.

The church was built entirely of hewn sandstone. Tarnovo impresses with its magnificent cathedral main cornice made in the form of a double yoke of alternating stone and red bricks. Very beautiful and interesting are oval windows that give the cathedral a unique and original look.

Besides the exterior architecture, the temple is impressive with its original interior. Arches of the temple were built of bricks and mortar, but the two rows capitals harmony and symmetry. Besides the main entrance Tarnovo cathedral has two symmetrical doors that lead to external arcades.

The church has three naves church without a bell tower and dome. Tower itself was built 30 meters west of the temple.

Interesting is also the story of the church. Here is served a thanksgiving service at the entry of Russian troops in Turnovo in 1877 and the temple is the place where Prince Alexander I Battenberg King Ferdinand I and sworn.

In 1913 "Virgin Birth" was completely destroyed during an earthquake. Thanks preserved plaster model of a temple made of Leon Filipov, the site of the demolished church Tarnovo erect a new church with the same facade. The first stone for the new building was laid in 1924 construction was the work of the master - builder and developer Grozyu grandfather, a church was completed and consecrated in 1934, was painted in 1954, as the drawings are the work of Bulgarian Artists Gyudzhenov D. , At.
